I was taking my 1995 Dodge Ram & 1996 Glick 2-horse bumper pull in for some maintenance and repairs, when I realized I didn’t have any breaks on my truck coming down the driveway! Thankfully, there was any traffic coming on our quiet, country road; but now I was starting down a somewhat steep hill towards a 90-degree turn.
It was a miracle that I was able to stop the rig right before the sharp turn. In hindsight, there were a couple of things I could have done; but as we know, hindsight is 20/20. I could have downshifted and/or I could have turned the dial on the trailer brake & hypothetically could have used the trailer brakes to stop the rig but ultimately, I believe, my guardian angels brought me to a safe stop in a shady area.

I called my husband, who was on his way to the service station ahead and asked him to turn around. I then called USRider and was asked a series of questions and in less than an hour, we had a very courteous, friendly, funny and an efficient towing company loading my Ram onto a flatbed and then hooking up my horse trailer to tag along!
My husband and I led the way to the service station and my rig was unloaded in no time. It was discovered that the brake line had rusted out. I thank God that I was protected since this could have had an entirely different outcome.
What if my husband had been sitting at the end of the driveway waiting for me and I had pushed him into oncoming traffic because I couldn’t stop?
What if when I had recently transported two loads of 60 bales of hay? What if the brakes went out as I approached a red light and couldn’t stop?
Above all, the worst probably for most horse people would have been if my precious horse had been with me and the brakes went out.
